Overview

The Director of Transportation will be a key member of the Operations leadership team and will be responsible for delivering costs savings, elevated customer experiences and strengthening of our relationships with our transportation partners. This position is based in our corporate office in Charlotte, NC and will build relationships with the Distribution, Planning and Supply Chain Strategy leaders as well as key stakeholders in Sales, Marketing, Finance and HR.

Responsibilities

  • This position leads transportation functions to include contracting, execution, network modeling and service of all domestic inbound and outbound freight.
  • Manage owned fleet as well as brokers and third-party carriers.
  • Responsible for the overall strategy and operations performance, this entails setting direction for the transportation team, thought leader in innovations, multi modal strategist, and identifying and cultivating strategic partnerships.
  • Accountable for leading best practices to the overall work processes, analytics, delivery methods, service as well as leading and executing the cost savings projects across the network.
  • Manage staff development and sustainable succession plan.
  • Lead the Transportation annual operating plan, manage and monitor cost performance.
  • Build and maintain the overall strategic plan, associated deliverables for the Transportation function, carrier strategy, mode, carrier type, systems / IT requirements, and fuel management.
  • Accountable for the Transportation procurement process
  • Manage carrier relationships and performance over a range of key performance indicators, such as on time performance, load acceptance, trailer pool compliance, data compliance and cost; including localized fleet
  • Corporate owner for the business execution and implementation of the Transportation Management System (TMS) including base functionality, continuous improvement development / mods, and freight payment management
  • Accountable for the overall performance and management of TMS functions, including reporting, organization and system interfaces, carrier set-up (compliance and training), routing guide development, and custom reporting / dashboards.
  • Transportation lead for S&OP process, including guidance on freight cost and lead time, and market impacts (capacity).
  • Lead risk mitigation strategy for the department that minimize the impact of potential operational disruptions.
  • With Finance Partners leads the development of the annual Transportation budget process, and monthly budget variance analysis and cost reconciliations.
  • Management of multiple cost savings projects - scope definition, planning, documentation / vetting, timeline execution and leadership of cross functional teams.
  • Coach, develop, train, and lead a team of transportation professionals.

Qualifications

  • 4-year degree preferred with minimum 10 years experience in supply chain management
  • Experience with Oracle, TMS and WMS systems
  • Continuous improvement initiatives
  • Management of teams across multiple locations
  • Solid analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, solve practical problems and deal with a variety of changing situations
